How to Achieve Planning Permission for an Outdoor Riding Arena
When intending to install a new Outdoor Equestrian Riding Arena, or redesign an existing one, there are certain steps that must be taken to ensure that the work is up to the necessary standards and will be approved by the local planning authorities.
RedStamp Lighting Designs provides an overview of the process to achieve planning permission below:
Step 1
Find experienced companies that can assist with the design and construction of the arena.
Typically you will need:
Lighting Designers - to specify the number of lights and columns necessary to provide a safe level of illumination for your planned arena activities.
Civil Contractors - to erect or modify the new/existing arena to meet the Lighting Designer's specifications.
Electrical Installers - to install the electrical infrastructure to power the lights, in accordance with the advice given by the Lighting Designers and Civil Contractors.
Step 2
Request a Product Specification, Lighting Design and Lux Spill Diagram from your chosen Lighting Design Company. Please see attached Lighting Design Example.
Your Local Planning Department will require these to be submitted on their portal to assess safety and environmental implications of the proposed arena.
Ideally, Planners want Arena Installations to have Minimal Upward Light and Minimal Lux Spill.
This reduces environmental disruption to both wildlife habitats and neighbouring properties.
Lighting Designers will require the below details to assist their work:
- Arena Dimensions (L x W)
- Intended Use (Personal, Club or Professional)
- Any Restrictions Imposed (Maximum Column Heights/Land Boundaries)
- Google Maps Image or Detailed Arena Plans
Step 3
Share the Lighting Designer's documents with your Civil Contractor and request for them to return a suitable Arena Construction Diagram.
Step 4
Submit the Arena Block Plans (Civil Contractor) and Lighting Documents (Lighting Designer) to your Local Planning Authorities Portal and await approval.
